5 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

Winter is no problem for Mother Nature. It is merely a time when the earth is bedded down in fallen leaves or snow and placed into a dormant state of sleep. It’s a time of rest and regeneration before the flurry of activity that spring brings. Winter need not be a problem for humans either if they live naturally and incorporate the following points into their lives.

1. Let The Light Shine

Lack of sunlight is a major cause of depressed moods over winter. As there is limited daylight during winter we need to make the most of what is available to us. Open the curtains first thing in the morning and close them just before dark. Try to keep as much light in the house as possible. An old European custom during the winter months, which is especially uplifting, is to have candles lit throughout the home during the day.

2. Get Out In The Sunshine

Spending time outdoors will allow you to receive the best light of all, direct sunlight. If it snows where you live all the better, because the snow reflects and intensifies the light making it brighter than ever. The simplest way to catch some rays in winter is to go out for a walk. You do not have to let the cold temperatures put you off. Just dress warm and enjoy the invigoration that only a brisk walk in cold weather can bring.

3. Get Regular Exercise

Exercise is a great mood lifter, so it’s one thing we should definitely continue doing throughout the winter months. Some animals hibernate and become less active over winter, but humans like the deer, need to keep moving! Becoming inactive over winter will only lower your energy levels and increase the inclination to feel depressed. So keep that body moving.

4. Break Your State

If you do find yourself feeling depressed during winter deliberately break your gloomy state by getting up and engaging in an uplifting activity. Dance around the living room, go for a walk or simply break into song. Try it! You will be surprised at how effective it is in changing your mood.

5. Cherish The Winter

The season of winter with it’s darkness and barrenness can be seen as a bleak time. How ever, there are features of winter that ought to be cherished. The extra nighttime hours can provide us with more opportunity to read, write and reflect on our life. It can also give us extra time to spend with others, or to indulge in those favorite soups and hot drinks that warm the soul. And if you are lucky enough to have some snow, winter is a time to cherish the picturesque beauty of the landscape. It is then, by all means, a winter wonderland.

There really is no need to feel blue over winter. We just need to know how to approach the season in a better way. In a way that will keep us just as cheerful in winter as any other time of the year.
